UPDATE: 2:57 p.m.

Lynchburg, VA – Snow has developed and continues across the ABC 13 Viewing Area ahead of a coastal system starting to take shape.

The Lynchburg area so far has seen mainly light snow, but into the early evening, bands of moderate snow will be moving in and giving a few places a coating before ending late this evening after sunset.

The Roanoke Valley has seen snow, accumulating up to a solid coating south of Roanoke into Franklin and Henry Counties.

Sections of the New River Valley are snow covered as well.

Southside Virginia from Martinsville to Danville and South Boston east to Charlotte Courthouse will see the highest snow amounts into the evening, where 1-3" is possible before ending later tonight.

Jet stream winds have pulled bands of snow further north Tuesday, with light to moderate snow falling in some areas.

Many schools have closed early today. For a full list, CLICK HERE.

Parts of Southside Virginia including Pittsylvania, Halifax, Campbell, and Charlotte Counties have a solid coating on the ground and even some roads.

Temperatures are very cold – in the teens in most areas – so when snow bands develop, the snow will stick instantly.

The afternoon and the evening will continue snowy in many areas, with some roads turning slick fast underneath the heaviest snow.

Total accumulations for most areas are still expected to be around a coating to 1". Locally higher amounts of 2-3" can't be ruled out, especially in Southside.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect today and tonight for southeast sections, including Danville, South Boston, Charlotte Court House and Clarksville. Accumulating snow on roads will cause travel problems!

A strong storm system moves up the East Coast bringing a major snowstorm to eastern North Carolina. We will be close enough to the storm that most locations see at least some snow through early evening.

Look for mostly cloudy skies and very cold conditions, with scattered light snow showers. Heavier areas of snow develop late day through early evening. Temperatures remain in the 20s. Most of the accumulating snow will be from Danville eastward to South Hill. One to two inches are possible, with some spots receiving three. From Lynchburg southwest to Blacksburg a coating to one inch is possible. Careful while traveling across the region.

Late evening the light snow and flurries depart. Overnight we have clearing skies and frigid conditions. Lows around 10. Wednesday remains very cold, as afternoon temperatures hold in the 20s.

It turns milder for the end of the week and the weekend, with the next chance of precipitation coming late Saturday in the form of light rain.  Weekend highs are likely to get into the 50s.
