Danville Public Works Preparing Roads For Winter Weather

Danville, VA - Danville Public Works is doing everything they can to stay ahead of the bad conditions.

This is the second time this season that Public Works has sent crews out to prep the roads. While the area had a slow start to snow Tuesday, they say it's better to be safe than sorry.

When warnings go out to keep drivers off the roads, Earl Gutherie gets behind the wheel. As an Equipment Operator for Danville Public Works, Gutherie makes a living keeping the streets safe for other drivers.

"You never know what is in store for you, I mean you always have to prepare for the worst and hope for the best," said Gutherie.

Luckily, throughout the day, this winter weather could have been a lot worse. But Public Works still sent crews out to put brine on the all primary roads in the city.

"Once you treat them, you are good for 36-48 hours," said Gutherie.

Gutherie started at 7 a.m. putting thousands of gallons of the mixture onto the streets.

"I think the city is doing a pretty good job of keeping it this morning," said Yvonne Hess, Danville resident.

Hess braved the roads to run errands during her lunch break.

"The roads are a little bit worse than people might think they are. I came across a little icy patch a little while ago," said Hess.

She's not the only one who came to Coleman Marketplace despite the weather.  Many people, however, say this will be their last outing for the day.

"We'll stay inside tonight probably, we don't like to get out in this weather," said John Bosiger, Halifax resident.

"I'm going inside," said Christine Wilson, Danville resident.

Keep in mind, Public Works only treats the main roads in the city. So it is important to be especially cautious on smaller roads that will not have brine on them.
