January Set To Break Water Main Break Record

Roanoke, VA - A dubious record is about to be set for the Western Virginia Water Authority as January looks like it's going to be a record month for water main break repairs.

The authority says this month alone they have answered the call to make 127 repairs as of this afternoon.

Typically during winter months crews will fix 65 breaks a month.

The record, of 130 repairs, was set in January 2010.

"It's that freezing and thawing of the ground as the ground soil swells and shifts it just really puts a lot of stress on the lines and causes them to break," said Sarah Baumgardner with the Western Virginia Water Authority.

The authority is also reporting that the types of breaks they are seeing are different.

In 2010 crews were busy fixing bigger pipes whereas the current rash of breaks is primarily affecting six and eight inch pipes.
