Appomattox, VA - The Appomattox man wanted for allegedly shooting and killing his estranged wife has been arrested.

Aubrey Evans, III, 69, was taken into custody Monday morning in Washington County near Bristol. Appomattox County Sheriff Barry Letterman says the Washington County Sheriff spotted Evans's SUV around 11 a.m. and pulled him over.

Evans is charged with the first degree murder of Laura Lee Evans, 45, at the Marathon gas station on Friday.

Appomattox County Sheriff Barry Letterman tells ABC 13 they had been tracking Aubrey Evans electronically since Friday.

Letterman says they pin-pointed Evans' location Monday. Within 30 minutes, Evans was in custody.

Letterman says Evans was arrested on Interstate 81 around 11 a.m. without incident. Two investigators have gone to Washington County to bring him back to Appomattox for questioning. Evans will be held at the Blue Ridge Regional Jail until his arraignment.

The victim, Laura Evans, was the Student Information Specialist for Appomattox Public School's Technology Center. Before that, she was the Guidance Office Secretary at Appomattox High School.

Superintendent Dorinda Grasty says many students were close with Evans. Grasty says each school had an early morning meeting to discuss how to best address Evan's death. Counseling services were also available.

Sheriff Letterman says this is the first homicide in Appomattox since 2011 and it hits the community hard.

"Appomattox is a small tight-knit community, and everybody pretty much knows everybody and it is, it's a quiet town," said Letterman.

Dorinda Grasty says Evans took a lot of pride in her work. Grasty had just seen her last week, and says Evans told her she was so happy to be back to work after all those snow days.

Grasty says it will be very difficult to go on now without her.
