Injured Circus Performer in Critical Condition

Roanoke, VA - A circus performer injured at the Roanoke Civic Center over the weekend, is in critical condition tonight.

Officials tell ABC 13 that Julian Gomez, 22, of Colombia, has woken up from a coma, but has a long way to go to recover.

Gomez was performing in the Shrine Circus's closing act he lost control of his motorcycle while landing a jump and hit a wall, officials say.

The accident happened during the 10 a.m. show. The 3 p.m. performance went on as scheduled.

The performer's family has made it to Roanoke to be by his side.

"It's hard to prepare for stuff like this. I mean, you know, once it happens you just have to grab it and take off and do the best that you can under the conditions," said Bob Boitnott with the Kazim Shrine Circus.

The Shriners have been working with Gomez's family to help get them accommodations while they're in the area.
