Danville, VA - Students at OT Bonner Middle School got quite a surprise as the superintendent, mayor and a number of other officials dropped in for a visit.
"It's always great for everybody to see children learning and teachers teaching, " said Superintendent Edward Newsome.
Three student tour guides led the officials to several pre-selected classrooms to see just what goes on day to day.
What they saw was very different from the description of assault and rampant disrespect that had been described last month.
"We became aware very early in the school year. We knew that there were some issues at Bonner Middle School, " said School Board Chairman Ed Polhamus.
School board chairman Ed Polhamus says the issues partially stem from an influx of students from the now closed Gibson Middle, and the replacement of former principal Kevin Whitlock half-way through the school year.
"Kids will be kids. You have to teach them a line not to cross and I think we didn't teach them not to cross that line in the beginning, " said Councilman John Gilstrap.
Gilstrap says he's impressed by what he saw, and the progress he's heard about. He hopes that it will continue.
Dr. Newsome says that will be dependent on proper communication between teachers and parents.
"We want parents to know that they can be involved in many different ways. We want parents to be, not only involved, but engaged in the life of the school, " Newsome said.
