Danville Area Humane Society Goes Under Partial Quarantine

Danville, VA - The Danville Area Humane Society is under partial quarantine after some dogs have been diagnosed with distemper.

The humane society has had two confirmed cases of the illness in animals that have been adopted and possibly in other dogs that have died and were not tested.

Executive Director Paulette Dean says the disease is uncommon but may have been spread to stray dogs from raccoons. Dean strongly recommends that everyone make sure their own pets are vaccinated.

A team from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine will visit the shelter next week.

"This is heartbreaking. I mean it is horrible...We know that people are going to be upset with us. We are doing everything in our power to overcome this issue," said Dean.

Right now they are still taking in animals, but they are making sure they are vaccinated before they are in contact with other animals.
