Roanoke Police Report Increase In Copper Theft

The Roanoke Police Department is asking the public to be extra vigilant when it comes to keeping an eye out for crimes in local neighborhoods.

They say there has been an increase in copper thefts, particularly from vacant homes and homes listed for sale.  Thieves have been targeting copper wiring and pipes from inside the homes as well as the copper components from inside external heating and air conditioning units at primarily vacant homes.

Some businesses and other buildings have also been targeted. Property owners and managers can help out by keeping regular checks on their properties.  Neighbors can help by keeping an eye out on any vacant properties, or homes for sale in their neighborhoods.

Police ask that people call 911 immediately if they see something suspicious.  An extra set of eyes and quick action might help authorities catch a thief.

Anyone with information on possible suspects in these thefts, please call the Roanoke Valley Crime Line at 540-344-8500.
