Child Seat Safety Check

Lynchburg, VA - Making sure your child's car seat is properly installed is so important. That's why the Lynchburg Fire Department set up shop at the Sam's Club Parking Lot on Wards Road Thursday to do free checks to ensure safety.

The most common mistakes parents make range from using an old car seat, to not buckling the car seat in tightly enough, or even not using the right type of seat belt to secure the child in his or her booster seat.

Fire officials also say those seat manuals can be really confusing.

"I want to make sure my kids are safe and you know, these things are complicated sometimes. These car seats getting them in and out and everytime you do it, it changes. So I just want to make sure I had them in the right way this time," said parent Emily Preite.

"The latest seats they come out with new bells and whistles, that can be confusing. They try to make things easier and they can end up being harder for the seats to be installed," said Captain Jennifer Collins of the Lynchburg City Fire Department.

Captain Collins also said that children should be kept facing the rear of the car until they are two-years-old.

If you missed the opportunity to have your child's car seat checked, you can call or stop by the fire department to have an official check it.
