Jubilee Center Celebrates 15 Year Anniversary

Lynchburg, VA- There was a lot of jubilation Saturday morning at the Jubilee Family Development Center, as it celebrated 15 years in business.

The center was founded in 1999 in an effort to create social and educational programs that would target at-risk kids and teenagers.

One member, 15-year-old Alexis Dabney, has been going to the Jubilee center for the past two years. She is one of the thousands of kids that the center inspires to achieve their academic goals. "I come to Jubilee here to like do my homework and if they need help with the younger kids I help them with that," said Alexis.

Over the last 15 years the center has been nationally recognized for its accomplishments. Their many awards include one from the Oprah Winfrey Show and two USA Today awards.

"We see the impact, now in the past 15 years how lives have been changed. how lives have been touched. We see young persons who probably didn't have the opportunities now have the opportunities to go to college and be successful," said Executive Director Sterling Wilder.

Around a hundred young men and woman attend the center's mentoring program and about 80 kids attend their free tutoring program per day.

"We have a beautiful gymnasium, athletic program, where a person in the community can work out in the daytime," explained Wilder.
