Local Student Helped Start Program to "Save a Mom"

Lynchburg, VA- A Brookville high school graduate is among 17 students who have created a project aimed at saving the lives of women in the Dominican Republic.

Cervical cancer is the leading cause of death for Dominican women. With the Save A Mom Project, University of Richmond students hope to bring down the costs of cervical cancer treatment procedures, making it more accessible to Dominican women. They have partnered up with Esperanza International, a non-profit organization, and are trying to raise $15,000 to provide 1,000 Dominican women access to this procedure.

"Our goal is now to be able to bring that to different clinics in the Dominican Republic and make it more accessible to woman who may otherwise not be able to afford treatment for cervical cancer," said Monika Payherin.
