President Obama Visits Monticello

Charlottesville, VA- President Obama visited Monticello on Monday afternoon.  The President was joined by French President Franco is Hollande. There were a lot of first in this trip.

This trip to Jefferson's mountain top home in Charlottesville was part of Hollande's three day visit to the US. It was the five years that Thomas Jefferson spent in France that inspired the design of Monticello but despite that inspiration, no French President has been there before.

President Obama landed on the runway in Charlottesville just after three Monday afternoon, on a recently refurbished C-32 aircraft as Air Force One.

The two then headed straight to Monticello to tour, closing down several roads in Charlottesville to allow their motorcade to get through.

Many former presidents and foreign dignitaries have visited Monticello but this is Obama's first visit to Jefferson's mountain-top estate.

Not only was the visit the President's first, it was also the first time a US president has visited Monticello with a foreign head of state
