Duke Energy: Recent Pipe Leak Needs No Immediate Action

Posted:

Danville, VA-- Officials had been worried about a second pipe leaking even more ash into the Dan River, causing a repeat of what happened two weeks ago.

On Friday evening, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said there's video showing a pipe under Duke Energy's coal ash pond with wide gaps between the seams.

They said there was water coming in from above the dump and through those gaps, and that water could be contaminated, causing another toxic spill into the Dan River.

On Sunday Duke Energy said there's nothing to worry about. According to their spokesperson, the company made an assessment and there is no need to take immediate action regarding that pipe.

The state of North Carolina has given Duke Energy 10 days to come up with a plan to fix the leak.
