Public Memorial for Slain Officer Kevin Quick Held In Charlottesville

Charlottesville, VA - Friends, family, and law enforcement came out in force Monday to honor Captain Kevin Quick, the Waynesboro police officer found dead earlier this month. His funeral was Monday morning in the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.

From the first speaker to the last, the same sentiment was repeated over and over. What a wonderful father, friend and officer Quick was, and how shocking it still is to have lost him so suddenly.

"We who are gathered here today are among the beneficiaries of his love, his friendship, his devotion and dedicated service to this extended community," said Chaplain Davis, with the Waynesboro Police Department.

Friends and fellow peacekeepers filed into John Paul Jones Arena to honor one of their most beloved, lost too soon.

"It's just hard to believe that he's gone and I'm still in shock. I mean, he was like my brother," said Pamela Smiley, a co-worker of Quick's.

A final salute from officers echoed the feeling of numerous other law enforcement agencies, especially Kevin Quick's own.

"I was angry that someone had taken one of my officers. I thought how dare they. How dare they hurt one of my officers and bring pain and suffering to my law enforcement family, and to Kevin's family," said Mike Wilhelm, Chief of the Waynesboro Police Department.

Pain and anger still fresh on the minds of so many, still wondering why such a compassionate leader was taken from them. All of them are still trying to find some solace in their loss.

"I believe that God needed a rock to smash those evil people against, and I believe he chose Kevin to be that rock," said Cpt. Mike Martin, of the Waynesboro Police Department.

"Everything is going to be OK, because Kevin will always be with us in spirit and in memory," said Wilhelm.

Quick was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. His family accepted it on his behalf.

Four people have been charged with felony gang participation in relation to Quick's death. Two people have been charged with stealing his vehicle. The investigation is ongoing.
