UPDATE: Wintry Mix Falling, Winter Weather Advisory Continues


UPDATE: 10:10: p.m.

Lynchburg, VA - A wave of moisture is moving though the area bringing with it areas of snow, sleet and freezing rain.

Small accumulations are possible, mainly north into the Highlands, but a coating can't be ruled out for other areas around Roanoke and Lynchburg including the NRV.

Only rain is expected in Southside, where temperatures are warmer.

If you are out on the roads tonight, or early in the morning for the AM commute, be extra careful for slick roads.

Lynchburg, VA – Compared to our last snow event, Monday's system of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain will be minor.

Still, while the system is coming from the west and starved for moisture, there will be enough energy to ring out some wintry weather overnight.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for area the Greater Lynchburg and Roanoke areas, including the New River Valley and areas to the north through 9 a.m. Tuesday.

Areas from Martinsville, Danville, South Boston and Charlotte Court House are only expecting to see rain from the system.

Most of the wintry weather will be over with around daybreak. Accumulations are only expected to average around a coating in most areas, to 1-2" in the highest elevations of the Alleghany Highlands.

With snow already on the ground, the biggest and most noticeable impact will be a thin layer of wintry mix on area roads. Be especially careful if our driving overnight and for the morning commute.

The mix will start by 10 p.m. and last through the night, ending by 5-6 a.m.
