Charlottesville, VA - State Senator Steve Newman calls it a major setback to 20 years of progress on the Route 29 bypass around Charlottesville.
On Wednesday the state Commissioner of Transportation received a letter from the Federal Highway Administration saying the state needs to find alternate routes for a bypass that are supported by the localities involved, and the public in general.
Basically it means the federal government will not approve the current planned route for the bypass.
The news comes as Albemarle County Supervisors are holding a public hearing on whether to approve the bypass.
Newman says even if they all voted in favor, it wouldn't matter - the letter says federal government won't approve it.
Newman says he's been meeting Wednesday afternoon with the state secretary of transportation, Aubrey Layne, who he says is vowing to work to find a solution, saying doing nothing, is not acceptable.
