Farmville Teen Fights for Plus Size Disney Princess

Posted:

Farmville, VA - A Farmville teen is getting lots of national attention after she petitioned Disney to make a 'Plus-Size' princess.

When ABC 13 first brought you this story a few weeks ago, Jewel Moore's petition had 18,000 signatures. Now she has more than 30,000 signatures.

Moore says she can't believe the petition she spontaneously started has received so much attention. All of the feedback over the last month has made her even more determined to see a positive representation of plus-size women in the media.

Moore is an outspoken 17-year-old Junior at Fuqua High School. The Farmville teen was thrown into the national spotlight after her petition on Change.org asking Disney for a plus-size princess went viral.

"To be completely frank, I kind of did it on a whim. I just had an idea and I said I'll kind of see what happens," Moore said.

Her goal was to get 100 signatures, but Moore says she never expected to get more than 30,000.

People from all over the world have reached out to her, touched by her efforts. Others, though, attacked her personally.

"What gets me about the comments thing 'are you plus-sized, are you overweight, you need to hit the gym blah blah blah'...Would you take me more seriously if I was skinny?" Moore said.

Moore also got backlash for using the term plus-size, but says she is referring to the term as it is used in the fashion industry, which means anyone over a size 10.

Moore says a new Disney Princess could help the next generation of kids.

"What we put in children's movies, even though we might say it's just a cartoon, I mean it is just a cartoon but in its own way those characters are very influential," Moore said. "I don't want to change Cinderella but if they were to make a new princess...you know just wider and thicker."

Just recently Moore mailed her second letter to Disney about making a plus-sized princess but hasn't heard anything back yet.

ABC 13 also reached out to Disney for a comment but have not gotten a call back.
