Bedford Council Wants Electric Bill Investigated

Posted:

Bedford, VA - The Town of Bedford got hit with a whopping electric bill for January and is asking elected officials to investigate potential price gouging.

The transmission rate the town pays was $500,000 more than usual. That portion of the town's bill went from $60,000 to $560,000.

The transmission rate is what's charged to get electricity to the town for distribution to homes. Bedford buys electricity using PJM, a regional transmission system that services this part of the country.

Town leaders plan to ask state and federal officials to look into whether this is a case of price gouging while it was extremely cold and demand was high.

The cost will be passed on to customers over three years. Bills will be about $1.40 more each month.
