Danville's River District Gets Free Wifi

Danville, VA - Danville's Economic Development Office hopes to draw you downtown with something for free. Wednesday they announced free wifi for everyone on Main Street from Floyd to Memorial.

As Leisa Royster stays busy working at Main Street Coffee Emporium, her customers are busy on line. Tablets, smart phones, and computers seem as commonplace here as the coffee.

"We're the technological age now," said Royster.

Royster hopes the free wifi just outside her door will help her bring in even more business.

"People who may not come downtown will now know about the wifi and so we are hoping to attract new customers," said Royster.

"They can come to the River District, grab a bite of lunch, sit outside on our new benches and access free public wifi," said Corrie Teague, Economic Development Project Manager.

No password necessary, all you have to do is sign on with 'River District WIFI'. City officials hope the new benches, widened sidewalks, and now wireless internet will highlight the work being done to bring businesses back to the area.

"We're attracting a lot of young entrepreneurs and high tech companies to the River District," said Teague.

Teague says many other cities in the region already offer this service.

"It does make us competitive and it makes us more attractive to recruiting businesses and developers," said Teague.

With four antennas, the project cost the city around $8,000. But many say if it will bring people downtown, it's worth the price.

The next step is to add free wifi to the Main Street plaza, by the fountain. And they hope to continue to expand the service area as they develop more streets downtown.
