UPDATE: 10:00 p.m.

One person is dead after Amherst County officials tell us a passenger car was driving the wrong way in the north-bound lane, and collided head-on with a truck.

This all happened around 5 o'clock this evening.

The driver of that vehicle driving in the wrong direction is the one police tell us died Wednesday.

State Police and the regional task force were working to re-create the accident scene tonight to determine exactly how it happened.

The whole thing held up traffic for hours.

Gary Roakes, the Amherst Co. Public Safety Director says, "Unfortunately it happened about the worst time today, 5-5:15 area on 29, which is obviously a very heavily traveled road. We had traffic backed up for several miles. We currently still have the Route 29 bypass blocked at Rt. 29 and 130, which is about six miles south of this accident scene."

And that six mile stretch still blocked tonight as officials work to determine how and why this driver was headed south in the north-bound lane.

We'll be following this story... stay with us for the latest updates.
