Samford baseball hands UAB its first loss of season

Posted: Updated:

Samford baseball flexed it's muscle and pounded the UAB Blazers.

Tripp Martin, Heath Quinn and Drew McWhorter hit homeruns in the Bulldogs 13-5 win. The loss is the Blazers first of the season.

Samford scored six runs in the first inning. Martin hit a 3-run homerun, Hunter Swilling added a 2-run double and Jared Watson delivered an RBI single.

UAB's starting pitcher Sam Kelley was tagged for six runs and seven hits in 2/3 of an inning.

The Blazers bullpen wasn't the answer either.

Samford struck for seven runs in the third inning. Caleb Bryson drove in the first run of the inning with an RBI single and Tyler Filliben followed with a bases-clearing triple. After a Martin sacrifice fly drove in another run, Quinn and McWhorter delivered back-to-back homeruns to give the Bulldogs a 13-0 lead.

Samford freshman pitcher Cody Pugh allowed one run in five innings to pick up his first win at the college level.

UAB scored one run in the fifth and four in the sixth inning. The Blazers finished with 11 hits but only one went for extra bases.

Samford (3-4) hosts a three game series with Butler beginning Friday at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

UAB (8-1) plays a weekend series with Arkansas State at Region Field.
