VA Attorney General Speaks on Same Sex Marriage Case

Bedford Co., VA - Attorney General Mark Herring says both sides of the gay marriage debate want it resolved once and for all in Virginia.

Herring, who was in Bedford County Thursday for an event with Sheriff Mike Brown, tells ABC 13 briefs in the appeal phase will be expedited.

His office filed a notice of appeal, although Herring will not defend Virginia's ban on gay marriage.

"I think most everyone agrees that this is a decision that ultimately has to be resolved by the courts, probably the U.S. Supreme Court," said Mark Herring, Virginia Attorney General. "This is an important step to get that definitive determination."

The Norfolk Circuit Court Clerk is also appealing a federal judge's ruling that overturned the ban.

Liberty Counsel, which has an office in Lynchburg, plans to file a brief in the appeal.
