Roanoke County Schools Dismiss Early Due To Bus Driver Shortage

Posted:

Roanoke, VA - Roanoke County schools sent a note out to parents Friday asking them to pick their children from school because no buses would be running in the afternoon.  This came as a result of many bus drivers calling out sick.

Roughly 40 of the school system's 150 drivers called out sick.

Several bus drivers told WSET they believe the issue is over the district's decision last night to reduce part time worker benefits from full time to part time benefits. That goes into effect July 1st.

School Superintendent Dr. Lorraine Lange said, "We regret that some of our school bus drivers have made a poor decision to call in sick this afternoon after dropping off students this morning so that we are not able to run buses this afternoon.

Therefore, we need your help, so we are calling to ask all parents to pick up their children from school.  Elementary students should be picked up by 12:20 p.m. and secondary students should be picked up by 1:25 p.m.

Again, we regret that some of our drivers have made this poor decision and I thank you for your help as we make sure our students get home safely today."
