Lynchburg, VA – Despite a very warm and spring-like day Sunday with temperatures in the middle 60s for highs, a strong cold front will combine with moisture and energy from the southwest to bring significant amounts of snow and sleet to the ABC 13 Viewing Area starting very early Monday morning.

A Winter Storm Warning is now in effect for the Greater Lynchburg / Roanoke areas and points north Monday. Winter Weather Advisories cover Southside now.

Just 48 hours ago, the system looked as if it would bring the area mostly rain. However computer models have trended colder and wetter with each update since Saturday morning.

The cold air from the north will arrive just as several waves of moisture ride along the cold front Monday. By the early morning hours of Monday, most of the area will be on the cold side of the front, allowing for wet snow to fall.

Rain will move in after a warm Sunday, by this evening into Sunday night, before changing to sleet as the colder air invades late Sunday night after midnight.

Accumulations of 3-6" appear likely for the Roanoke and Lynchburg areas, with amounts of 4-8" where the moisture stays all snow. Amounts may vary depending on how much sleet falls during the transition from rain to snow early Monday.

It appears most areas will eventually see all snow before the system moves out late Monday. Southside will have more sleet than other areas, but a 1-4" of snow is still possible there as well.

This is a rapidly developing weather situation. Weather conditions will turn hazardous in a hurry beginning late Sunday night and into Monday morning.

The morning commute Monday will be of particular concern.
