After Coal Ash Spill, Bottled Water Sales Increase in Danville

Posted:

Danville, VA - Local grocery stores in Danville have seen a major increase in bottled water sales since the Duke Energy coal ash spill.

Some have reported a sales jump as high as 50 percent since nearly 40 thousand tons of coal ash spilled into the Dan River.

Local water delivery companies, like Blue Ridge Spring and Mountain Park, have also seen their sales spike.

Despite testing by the EPA, City of Danville, and Duke Energy that shows the water is indeed safe to drink, some local residents remain skeptical.

"There's probably nothing wrong with the water, but everyone has a little question in their mind. I think some of it is just some people are a little scared of it and just being safe, " said Old Dutch Two Manager Robert Yeatts.

At a recent meeting, Duke Energy said they plan to test the water indefinitely to ensure that the water continues to meet safe drinking standards.
