Roanoke County Breaks Ground On Police Academy

Posted:

Roanoke, VA - After six years with no permanent place to call home, Roanoke County broke ground on a new police academy Thursday afternoon.

The Roanoke County Criminal Justice Academy will actually be an 8,300 square foot addition onto the existing academy building.

The project is a joint venture that will have cadets training and learning together.

"They work really side by side. You've got Roanoke City and you've got Roanoke County and you have a boundary line but they also run calls together so by doing that you are going to have comradery and cooperation among the officers themselves," said Lt. Mike Williams who leads the county's academy efforts.

A large majority of the addition's $2.6 million dollar price tag is being paid for with asset forfeiture funds.

Construction should wrap up in about a year.
