Late Lynchburg Civil Rights Leader Honored At Wake

Lynchburg, VA - People packed the pews of the Court Street Baptist Church in Lynchburg Thursday night, to pay their respects to Garnell Stamps.

The local civil rights leader died late last month from heart problems; his wake was Thursday. More than 100 showed up to mourn and show support for his family.

Stamps was a Lynchburg City School teacher that became an active during the civil rights movement. He is widely recognized now as a local figure that helped move the city away from segregation.

"He was a person that I could say went from a little one to the great one, and I will miss him very much. Dr. Stamps was a wonderful man" said David Massie, who attended the wake.

Friday at 1 p.m. Garnell Stamps' funeral will take place at the Tree of Life Ministries.
