VHSL Basketball Tourney Not Affected By Snow

Salem, VA - Friday's snowfall, while shutting districts across the area, will not affect the VHSL semi final basketball tournament beginning in Salem Friday night.

With hundreds of people planning to make their way to Salem for the tournament many might have been feeling like Bill Haynes after waking up to the snow.

"We don't get an opportunity to see them that often," said Haynes.

An Altavista graduate of 1962, and current Salem resident, Haynes didn't want to miss the chance to see a familiar friend in action.

"We're still going to go to the ball game. I didn't think we were early this morning but so far so good," said Haynes.

The tournament site manager, Carey Harveycutter, was a little concerned too.

"The challenge here is you have school kids that have to get on buses and come here," said Harveycutter.

He was finally able to hear back from all four teams playing Friday night, just before lunch, taking a lot off of his mind at just the right time.

Not that an alternative wasn't planned; all six games would have been stuffed into Saturday.

The relief is as much about feeling good that all those fans and players making the four hour round trip should make it safely.

"You always want to err on the side of safety," said Harveycutter.

Friday's games begin at 6pm with the Altavista boys team kicking off against Galax.

The girls team has a tip off time of 7:45 against Chillhowie.

Saturday the Salem Civic Center will host four games beginning at 1:00.
