New And Familiar Faces At Lynchburg City Council Candidate Forum

Lynchburg, VA - Candidates for Lynchburg City Council kicked off their campaigns Monday in the year's first candidate's forum. There were some familiar faces and some fresh ones, all vying for three council seats. It was hosted by The Lynchburg Voters League.

Up for grabs are city council's three at-large seats. At the first candidate's forum of this political season, there were some familiar faces.

"In the end, all of us want to preserve the things that are good about our city, and help lift up the areas where we may be falling short" said H. Cary.

Cary has served on council since 2010. He's wrapping up his first term as an at large representative.

"I believe there's work still to be done, and that is one of the reasons why I am running again" said Joan Foster.

Foster is the Hill City's first female mayor was elected to council 12 years ago. In that time she served as an at-large rep, vice mayor, and mayor.

"I understand the importance of team work and in being involved and pulling together the talents of all resources" said Randy Nelson.

Nelson currently serves on council. The lawyer is seeking a second term.

Treney Tweedy is running as well. Tweedy is not quite foreign to City Council. She was appointed in 2008 to the Lynchburg City School Board, where she serves as its Vice Chair.

"I know how to maintain a strong education system to attract businesses, because I've been doing it for six years" she said.

Two candidates were not present, Monday. Keith Anderson, a former city school board member and pastor, sent a representative. He was on a missions trip. Rhonnie Smith was absent as well. Smith is a retired B&W division President, and was out of state dealing with a death in his family.

The election is May 6th; all candidates are running as independents. Following speeches and questions from the audience, the voters league endorsed Treney Tweedy, Joan Foster and Randy Nelson.
