Roanoke Approves Special Exception For AirBnB User

Roanoke, VA - A Roanoke man has been given the green light to continue renting out a spare bedroom using the popular new website

The site allows people to rent out a variety of spaces... usually to travelers.

That caught the attention of Roanoke zoning officials after a complaint leading to Wednesday's public hearing.  Evidence that localities are going to have to change the way they look at things to keep up with the times.

Initially officials put a stop to the rentals until they could figure out a course of action.

In the meantime city officials told at least one citizen to file for a special exception to be looked at as a bed and breakfast... which he did - and was approved.

"After consideration they have decided to classify it as a bed and breakfast because there isn't a code that deals with the sharing economy - which is what Air BnB is. So basically I am going along with the procedures," said River Laker who was approved to continue operating.

Laker will still have to comply with all rules and regulations governing bed and breakfasts.

City leaders plan on working on specific ordinances to tackle this new "sharing" economy.
