Construction Bid For New Heritage HS Lower Than Expected

Lynchburg, VA - Construction costs for a new Heritage High school came in well under initial estimates.

Many Lynchburg city officials were elated over Wednesday's news. When bids came in Wednesday afternoon, the lowest, was more than $3.5 million less than initially expected.

Barton Malow Construction of Charlottesville bid for the project at $63.4 million. Architects estimated construction would cost around $67 million.

Construction is just one aspect of the total project though. Other costs include architect fees, furniture and fixtures, as well as a contingency.

"When you add all that together, we're still looking in the range of probably now a total project cost between $75-$80 million, and we'd kind of been working with an $80 million dollar figure" said Kimball Payne, Lynchburg's City Manager.

The bid still requires approval from the city school board.
