Car Runs Into Basement of House In Lynchburg

Lynchburg, VA - A Lynchburg woman is thankful to be alive after jumping out of the way of a car that ran into her home Wednesday night.

She was not the only one in the house, her 14 year old son was sleeping in the bedroom just above where the car hit.

The woman driving the car has been charged with reckless driving, as well as driving under the influence of drugs. She was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but is ok.

Everyone involved echoed the same thought; they are just glad that everyone is alive.

"It's scary, it really is, it's scary," said Leeann Shupe who lives in the home that was hit.

She lives there with her parents and son. She was working on a craft project in the basement when she heard a loud "pop."

"That's when I seen the glass blow inside and I just dove," said Shupe.

Debris flew across the room as the car came crashing in. A cement block even hit Shupe in her back. She ran up the stairs and outside. All she could hear was screaming.

"I ran out of the house and that's when I seen that a car was in my basement," said Shupe.

Shupe could smell gas and was scared the car would catch fire, so she got the driver out of the car.

"She was screaming and I was just trying to calm her down and everything," said Shupe.

Evangeline Foster lives next door and saw the commotion outside.

"I saw the fireman running around the house next door and I thought the house was on fire," said Foster.

Later, Foster found her fence destroyed and saw the car half inside the basement next door.

"Things happen, but I'm glad nobody really got hurt. It could've been a lot worse," said Foster.

"I'm glad everybody's ok and I don't wish this on anybody," said Shupe.

Shupe said Fire-fighters said they can stay in the house. They told them to stay away from that side of the basement. The family does have insurance and are waiting to hear what the next step is to fix their house.
