Man Walks Across The US To Raise Awareness Of Mental Illness

Bedford, VA - He's walking three thousand miles, each step in honor of his brother. Ian Cummins is walking from Virginia Beach to San Francisco to raise awareness for mental illness.

His brother at 20 years old, committed suicide in November. Cummins, extremely close to his brother was left upset, questioning his own life, and decided he'd try to make sure that no one else had to deal with what his brother did.

He quit his job as a nurse to pursue the walk. He prepared for months, and is hoping to arrive in California by September.

13 days, and only a few hundred miles into his walk Thursday, he says the support he's received from complete strangers has been overwhelming.

Cummins was in Bedford, along Route 460 on Thursday, "It's been incredible, Virginia's quite the state. The hospitality, just the generosity of people that I've met have been wonderful. I know it's so often that we see a lot of negativity in our world, and it's hard to remember that that's just such a small percent of just the good that's out there" he said.

Cummins is staying with host families along the way. You can track his progress at his website,
