UPDATE 1740:

Salem, VA - The man who pleaded guilty to killing a 13-month-old girl in Roanoke County will spend 32 years behind bars.

Testimony Friday painted 28 year-old convicted child killer, Preston King, as a socially awkward man who was significantly bullied as a teen.

Abuse that led to drugs and an inability to mature as man.

The inability to care for a child.

"I can easily imagine him being overwhelmed in a parenting situation particularly when he has no real experience," said Dr. Evan Nelson who evaluated King.

The prosecution countered with an emotional statement reminding the court of just how precious 13-month old children really are.

"I think they represent the hope and promise of a world that could be rather than a world as it is. And I think by protecting those children we move toward a better world," said Holoran.

While the defense offered no excuses they say mitigating circumstances should be considered - going as far as suggesting the parents are also to blame for not being there for VeraLee in the first place.

A claim the judge himself dismissed as he ordered King to prison until he is nearly 60 years old.

A long time... just not long enough for everyone.

"No matter how much time he gets it won't bring her back. I won't have her," said Veralee's father, Jonathan.

"It's not over for me there's so much more to this. I'll never be able to fully grieve. I still don't know what happened. And that's the hardest thing; not knowing what happened and why it happened."
