Family and Friends Hold Memorial Service for Sandusky Middle School Student

Lynchburg, VA - A sad remembrance Friday for a 14-year-old Lynchburg boy who recently passed away. The family of RJ Brown held a memorial service at his school, Sandusky Middle.

Students wiped away tears as they remembered their classmate and friend RJ Brown. RJ passed away a little more than a month ago. You couldn't really find a happier little guy, he woke up with a smile on his face every morning," said RJ's mother Kelly Roberts.

The 14-year-old suffered from Muscular Dystrophy, a disorder that weakened his muscles...and eventually caused his heart to give out. "He loved coming to school, everybody here was so good to him too," said Roberts.

Students and teachers at Sandusky Middle wanted to keep RJ's memory alive. So they decided to dedicate a Spartan mural to the popular 8th grader.

They also began to raise money for MDA and donated $1000 on RJ's behalf, so other kids with Muscular Dystrophy can also spend their summers at camp.

"I couldn't go with him but he went to MDA camp every summer because he loved that camp," said Elijah Brown.

Elijah Brown says he's choosing to celebrate his brother's life and not mourn his death. He says can't wait until he too becomes a student at Sandusky Middle School in a couple years, so he can always see his brother's mural. "Every day I walk in the door and see RJ's name… That'll just be cool," said Elijah Brown.

In the spring, student and teachers at Sandusky Middle will also plant a tree in his honor.
