Lynchburg Woman Wins Ms. Wheelchair Virginia Competition

Lynchburg, VA- A Lynchburg woman is making a name for herself in theVirginia pageant circuit.

Kanika Davis was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Virginia 2014Saturday night at the state-wide competition in Fishersville.

"I had to figure out how to live my life beyond the limitation of notbeing able to walk," said Davis who sustained an injury during surgerywhen she was 15. She has been in a wheelchair ever since.

"I had to go to rehab and learn how to live my new life as a personusing a wheelchair," said Davis.

Her disability has not held her back at all.

"I think it is a true blessing that she is able to do this and is ableto go out and reach others in the communities with disabilities to show themthat just because you are disabled it doesn't mean that you can't move forwardin life and do things in life and live it to the fullest," said Kanika'smother, Kim.

Davis prepared for Ms. Wheelchair Virginia for months, and Saturday night,all that hard work paid off.

"They said my name and I was shocked and surprised and you knowoverwhelmed with excitement," said Davis.

The judges were won over by Davis' presentation about her passion fortraveling.

"We have a voice, we have an ability to do things and live our lives justas anyone else does," said Davis.

Her motto is "putting the wheels in motion." She wants to raiseawareness about the need for handicap accessibility when traveling.

"Life is worth living and I definitely plan to live it and enjoy it andhopefully inspire and encourage others to be accepting of all people,"said Davis.

During her reign, Davis plans to be active in the community raising awareness and money for the Ms. Wheelchair Virginia program. She will also fundraise so she can head to the national competition in Long Beach, California this summer. If you would like to help support her cause you can head here.
