State Police: Man Who Crashed at 460 Checkpoint Shot Himself

Posted:

Richmond, VA – Virginia State Police confirm the driver who crashed into a pickup truck at a sobriety checkpoint on Route 460 last year committed suicide.

State Police say Emerson Evans, 25, crashed his Honda CRV into the truck at the Bedford County/Campbell County line on May 24.

State Police say the medical examiner determined Evans died from a gunshot wound. A spokeswoman says a handgun was retrieved from inside Evans' car, and that a ballistics test proves the bullet that killed Evans came from that handgun. Police told us in the days just after the crash that Evans was the only person inside his car.

Officers on the scene report seeing Evans run his car off the road before approaching the checkpoint and then into the stopped pickup. Several officers had to jump out of the way to keep from being hit by Evans' car. The man and woman in the pickup were not badly hurt.

State Police say they have no indication that Evans wanted to hurt officers or other people on the road that night. There were no warrants out for Evans' arrest, and nothing illegal was found in the car, according to State Police.
