Blacksburg - Hokies head basketball coach James Johnson has been fired after two seasons.
New Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock said Monday he felt a change and new direction was necessary for the long term, best interest of the department. He thanked Johnson for his dedication and hard work the past seven years, five as an assistant. Babcock said a national search for Johnson's replacement will start right away. Beset by injuries, the Hokies struggled to a 9-and-22 season this year, 2-and-16 in the ACC, their second-straight last-place finish.
Johnson's two-year mark as Tech head coach was 22-and-41 overall, 6-and-30 in the ACC. The Hokies lost 17 of their last 18 games, including the final seven.
