Gov. McAuliffe Tours Danville Water Treatment Plant

Danville, VA - Governor Terry McAuliffe toured Danville's water treatment plant as part of his Southside visit Tuesday.

McAuliffe says he has been keeping a close eye on the aftermath of the Duke Energy coal ash spill, but he wanted to check for himself to make sure the water is safe for the folks who rely on it.

The mayor, city manager, and several other officials also joined Governor McAuliffe on that tour.

The Governor says it was important for him to see firsthand what the city is doing to make sure the water meets quality standards.

McAuliffe says he has been in frequent communication with the Governor of North Carolina as well as the CEO of Duke Energy.

The Governor says the company has promised to offer assistance and compensation where necessary.

When asked about the potential long term effects, the Governor said he will rely on the DEQ to make that determination over the next few years.

"No need to speculate. My biggest concern obviously is making sure the drinking water is safe. I'm going to have a little glass of water myself. Everybody is assured that the drinking water is safe, but now we need to let DEQ do their work, " McAuliffe said.

The Governor says accidents like these have a lot to do with his reasons for opposing uranium mining. He says this has reassured him that he made "the right decision."
