Halifax Family Loses Home in Fire

Nathalie, VA - A family of six in Halifax is without a home, without their belongings tonight after a fire ripped through their house.

Fire crews responded to the 8000 block of L.P. Bailey Memorial Highway around noon on Saturday, and found the house engulfed.

Owner, Darby McGeorge, said he and his family are devastated, but thankful no one was home at the time.

His neighbor called him that afternoon and told him that the middle of their house was in flames.

"Usually we always make sure that everything is off and my grandson possibly went back to sit down... because I went out to the shed," McGeorge said. "He was sitting in front of the couch on the floor. He probably turned the heater back on, I don't know."

The Red Cross and Salvation Army are helping the McGeorge family. They've been staying in a hotel, but will have to leave by Friday and don't know where they'll go.

If you would like to help the McGeorge family, they can be contacted at 434 222-7298.
