More Vases Disappear From Southside Cemeteries

Mecklenburg Co., VA - Thieves have struck another Southside cemetery, stealing 131 bronze vases from Crestview Memorial Park in Mecklenburg County.

That cemetery is just the latest to be affected in a string of thefts including, Prince George, Hampton Roads, and South Boston.

For Mecklenburg County Sheriff Bobby Hawkins, the graveside thefts in South Boston hit close to home.

"I understand how these families feel because it is personal. It is affecting me, " Hawkins said.

His father is buried in the Halifax County memorial park that was hit.

Though his vase was not disturbed, Hawkins says he wants peace for the families dealing with these crimes.

"Somebody that would do something like this, that is about as low as you can get, " Hawkins said.

Someone has stolen more than 130 vases from this Mecklenburg County cemetery, and Hawkins says, it's not a first in this area.

In 2012, Clint Reamy was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for stealing hundreds of vases to sell them as scrap metal.

"In this day and time a lot of people are hurting. Good people are making poor choices just trying to survive, " Hawkins said.

Law enforcement agencies across the state have been spreading the message to those scrap metal yards.

Local recyclers we spoke to say they obtain detailed information on all transactions - especially those that seem out of the ordinary - so they can help police track thieves.

They too want to see those responsible brought to justice.

"Those are the people we want off the street, and I'll do all I can to do that, " Hawkins said.

South Boston Police say they do not have any leads yet on the thefts there, but police want to hear from you.
