Danville, VA - Duke Energy notified the City of Danville today of a brief discharge of water that occurred Wednesday at its Dan River Steam Station site in Eden, N.C. The discharge did not contain coal ash or any coal residuals.
The discharge occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m. Wednesday when an excavator hit a pipe used to convey collected storm water and wastewater, releasing approximately 1,000 gallons. A portion of the release was discharged into the Dan River.
The company reports site personnel took immediate corrective action to stop the flow, and measures have been taken to prevent any future discharge. Appropriate notifications to the state have been made. This unpermitted release did not pose any health or environmental concern in the river, Duke Energy said.
The excavator was performing permitted work at the site of a new boat ramp being constructed to facilitate ongoing environmental monitoring and river clean-up activities related to the Feb. 2 coal ash release.
