Plans for Route 29 Bypass Through Charlottesville Shelved

Lynchburg, VA -

Charlottesville, VA - The long-delayed U.S. Route 29 bypass through Charlottesville has been shelved, according to the Commonwealth Transportation Advisory Board.

The Federal Highway Administration formed a special advisory panel to re-evaluate the bypass plans, and now Lynchburg officials are being told that bypass talks are being halted.

It comes as a surprise for many, including Lynchburg City Manager Kimball Payne. Payne had seen a letter from the state. In that letter, Payne stated, "There was no indication...that the current proposal (of the bypass) was off the table."

The Route 29 advisory panel meets this Thursday, and will discuss alternatives to the Charlottesville bypass.
