Lynchburg Public Works Crews Tackle Yet Another Snow Storm

Lynchburg, VA - With temperatures tumbling to 20 degrees Tuesday night, the wet roads turned icy. Crews were out all night, salting and sanding streets.

The battle was making sure that what melted during the day Tuesday, didn't freeze Tuesday night and make for dangerous black ice come morning.

It was another storm and another round of treating slick streets for Lynchburg Public Works.

"We're really concerned now about the wet pavement. The areas where you're still getting some melting that's running across the road, it's obviously going to freeze over" said Klaus Schreiber.

Schreiber, a Supervisor for the Lynchburg Department of Public Works, oversaw crews tackling trouble spots around the city Tuesday.

The city's latest storm was followed by tumbling temperatures, freezing over slick streets.

"Because the temperature is going to get so low tonight, we're going to look for applying a mixed load of chemicals, that'll be salt and slag mix" said Schreiber.

Hot mix, a combination of salt and slag for traction, is what can make or break a safe morning commute.

Tuesday's storm was the 15th winter weather event that Lynchburg crews had to treat. From early freezing rain and sleet, to heavy snow blanketing the city; you wouldn't know it, but spring is well underway and crews have had it with winter.

"Not just with the snow itself, but disrupting other work we normally try to take care of in the winter months, so it's created a lot of issues and most of us are looking forward to Spring" said Schreiber.

A sentiment echoed by drivers in the Hill City.

"I am, surprisingly it's not Spring yet though. It's supposed to be" said one man.

Public works had trucks out through Wednesday morning. A skeleton crew though, 10 trucks going street to street solely to clean up icy spots.
