Lynchburg City Schools Honored In "Showcase for Success"

Lynchburg, VA -

Two Lynchburg City Schools are being recognized by the Virginia School Boards Association.

Linkhorne Middle School and Perrymont Elementary School have been honored in the VSBA's "Showcase for Success".

A distinction reserved for only the best school programs in the state, these two schools were selected out hundreds of programs submitted, from 62 school divisions around the Commonwealth.

Linkhorne Middle School has seen the number of students requiring summer school drop by 40%, due in large part, to the school's "Boot Camp" program. Teachers work with students who fall behind in homework, to help them catch up and comprehend classroom lessons.

Meanwhile, the "Jaguar" student ambassador program has students working with one another to help present programs that warn students about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and bullying. In October, students wrote, directed, and starred in their own film about the danger that bullying presents.

At Perrymont Elementary, the "Lunch Bunch" reading club has students giving up the cafeteria, and participating in reading and discussions in a relaxed environment. Thanks to a grant from the Lynchburg Education Foundation, the students read from a Kindle, which teacher Maureen Sheedy-Morris says, helps make new readers more comfortable. She notes that "Books can, often times, be intimidating. Whether you're a great reader, or a struggling reader, you're trying to keep up with pages."

The school is already seeing great results, in students' test scores and comprehension. Thanks to the club's low-pressure environment, students participate in discussions and presentations about reading material. Sheedy-Morris says "We have little book talks, they take the AR tests, they actually present the information on their books, to the school."

Three great programs. Two worthy schools. One well-deserved honor.
