Danville Police Department Hoping For Another Space

Danville, VA - Danville's police chief says their department needs more space. Chief Philip Broadfoot proposed an idea to city council as part of its long term capital improvement plan.

They need more space and more importantly better security, but it wouldn't come easily.

There are currently several entrances into the Police Department and the main one leads you to a hallway with offices on either side sothere is only a small secured area.

Because of this, they aren't as protected as most police departments. Plus, they only have only one interrogation room and very little space to work with.

They are hoping to come up with a long term plan to either build a new facility or renovate a building to fit their needs. They are looking at a minimum of five years and up to 16 million dollars in costs to make it all happen.

"It's certainly not something that's in concrete. It's a long term plan. But it's starting that process for us to have a discussion about what we need and what we can do," said Major Christopher Wiles, Danville Police Department.

The biggest downfall of moving would be that right now the police department is attached to the courthouse. A new facility likely wouldn't let them walk between the two buildings.
