Mecklenburg Co. Sheriff Warns Other Localities Of Grave Desecrations

Mecklenburg, Co., VA - When Mecklenburg Co. Sheriff Bobby Hawkins got a call last week about something suspicious in a local cemetery, he had no idea what he was about to find.

"Thirty-seven years in law enforcement, I've never had to deal with this before, " Hawkins said.

When the Sheriff and his deputies arrived, they found that the body of Betty Cliborne, a Georgia resident buried in a family plot 14 years ago, had been exhumed and desecrated.

"Most crimes, you know about which way you want to go. This one is a little bit out there, " Hawkins said.

The next day, while checking other cemeteries, another disturbing discovery: the grave of a 7-month-old, deceased for 15 years, had also been tampered with.

The two victims had no connection prior to that day.

"Everybody's on edge now. And it's been emotionally hard on a of us, " Hawkins said.

Hawkins began warning neighboring localities, including Halifax County.

"We just want to let the community know we've stepped up our patrols in cemeteries, looking for anything suspicious, " said Major Tommy Spencer with the Halifax County Sheriff's Office.

So far, there have been no reports of this crime in surrounding areas. Hawkins hopes it will stay that way.

"We're encouraging the public to get out and check these cemeteries. If they see anything unusual, do not confront anybody. Get a tag number, get a description, and let us know, " Hawkins said.

As of now, Hawkins says there doesn't seem to be any connection between these crimes and the recent theft of hundreds of graveside vases.
