National Softball Team Making a Stop in Lynchburg

Lynchburg, VA- It's a one-of-a-kind opportunity for local softball players who want to make it to the next level. This summer for the first time ever, the USA Women's National Softball Team will be playing an exhibition game in the Hill City.

Not only will this be a local game played at Hillcats stadium, it will be against local players too! A group of talented young women will get the chance to play against and learn from some of the best softball players in the nation.

"Come out in June because we're going to have a ball," said Lynchburg Mayor Michael Gillette about June's exhibition game.

The Hill City has hit a home run by snagging a game with some of the USA National Softball team.

"We're really hoping that this will be an opportunity for young girls to get out and play with some of the most elite athletes in the sport," said Kay Frazier, Director of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation.

"It would be absolutely unforgivable if we didn't take advantage of every opportunity to engage our young women in sports that help them grow as people and help our city feel that we really can cheer for all the best and the brightest among us," said Gillette.

A group of college-aged softball players will get to give it their all against the National Team, led by Liberty University's Head Softball Coach, and former National Team member, Dr. Dot Richardson.

"This is huge for Lynchburg to have the USA National Team come here, and particularly their first stop, to play exhibition games in preparation for the world championship," said Richardson.

Younger players can get in on the action as well, working one-on-one with the national team and its coach in a softball clinic. It will be the first softball event of its kind in Lynchburg, and local leaders hope it won't be the last.

"Hopefully all of the people who are going to come out and visit Lynchburg, and enjoy the game, and eat in our restaurants, and stay in our hotels. And we are just thrilled that's all going to happen," said Gillette.

"The city of Lynchburg is getting it. The vision of what we can do with sports in this community is like astronomical," said Richardson.

The double-header exhibition game is set for Friday June 13 at 7 p.m. You can buy tickets at City Stadium starting April 4, or you can buy tickets online.

The softball clinic is Saturday June 14 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Peaks View Park for ages 6-18. It is $75 a player. You can register online or stop by the Parks and Recreation Administration Offices at 2704 Concord Turnpike.
