Slavery Symposium Saturday at Poplar Forest

Forest, VA - Randolph College and Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest are joining together to offer a Slavery Symposium this weekend.

The event started Thursday night and will run through Saturday.

There are multiple speakers and panel discussions at the college and today many toured Popular Forest.

President of Poplar Forest Jeffrey Nichols says this symposium is for the community to learn about slavery's legacy.

While Jefferson visited his retreat home at Poplar Forest many times, there were slaves who lived on the plantation and spent their entire lives there.

Nichols says he hopes this weekend will help enlighten many people about this history.

"We're trying to fully incorporate that story and explore all those people and the meaning and the legacy they left behind," said Nichols.

Saturday's events start at 9 a.m. at Randolph College and will run until 7 p.m.
