Bedford County, VA - A Bedford County mother accused of murdering her own child will undergo two different types of mental evaluations before her case goes any further.

Shana Witt and her husband Michael Smith both appeared before a judge Monday afternoon.

Witt is charged with first degree murder.

Smith is charged with manufacturing methamphetamines and child abuse and endangerment.

Two separate hearings were held back to back for Witt and Smith.

In both cases the judge agreed to postpone preliminary hearings until June 2nd.

Two-year-old Jordan Smith was strangled and suffocated in late February, according to Bedford County authorities.

A search warrant says investigators found a stuffed animal in the child's bed inside the family's trailer and that Witt confessed to smothering him with a stuffed animal.

Witt's attorney asked the court for two evaluations.

One will determine Witt's competency to stand trial.

The other will look at her sanity at the time of the offense.

"I've been speaking with her a lot and with her family and examining some of her academic records and so forth and those things raised a lot of questions in my mind that I feel need to be answered before we can move forward with her case," said Linda Willis, Witt's Attorney.

Willis says it is clear to her from her interactions with her client, that Witt has questionable mental health and intellectual functioning.

The Commonwealth had no objections and agrees it is best to let an expert determine Witt's competency before the case really gets going.
